The Chairman of the Supreme Council of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly and the CEO of the Ashura International Foundation, offering his condolences on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Sadiq (a.s.), elaborated on the historic and decisive role of this noble Imam (a.s.) and his revered father, Imam Baqir (a.s.), in purifying Islam from deviant thoughts.

Ayatollah Mohammad Hassan Akhtari emphasized, “What had peaked during the time of Imam Baqir (a.s.) and Imam Sadiq (a.s.) was the presentation of fabricated ideas and false doctrines in place of the real Islam and its pure teachings.”

Speaking at the Council of Deputies of the Ashura International Foundation, he referred to the Umayyad conspiracies aimed at diverting the Islamic Ummah from the true path. “The Umayyads sought to discredit all that was religious and Islamic, attempting to strip Islam of its authentic essence.”

Pointing to the “forced conversion to Islam by Abu Sufyan and Mu’awiyah,” this Islamic intellectual remarked, “They only accepted Islam after the conquest of Mecca by the Muslims, and that too merely to save their lives. Thereafter, they continuously worked to eliminate religion’s role in guiding human life through various means.”

Referring to specific deviations brought by Mu’awiyah into Islam, he stated, “From the moment he was appointed governor of Levant by the caliphs, he began granting himself privileges and engaging in practices that not only contradicted the teachings of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) and the commands of the Holy Quran but even diverged from the ways of the first and second caliphs. His extravagance and wastefulness were so extreme that he came to be known as ‘the Khosrow of the Arabs’!”

Ayatollah Akhtari added, “Another issue that began with Mu’awiyah was the fabrication, interpretation, and distortion of Hadiths. Additionally, some individuals with the potential for deviation introduced concepts such as ‘valuing monasticism’ and ideas like ‘separation of religion from politics’ into the religion.”

The Chairman of the Supreme Council of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly emphasized, “Methods such as ‘mysticism and un-Islamic asceticism,’ which later became deviant sects, were all laid down during the Umayyad rule and were orchestrated by this dynasty.”

He further stated, “As a result of these actions during that period, around 100 deviant sects were created to distort and obscure the true message of Islam. Therefore, Imam Baqir (a.s.) and Imam Sadiq (a.s.) strove to introduce and make known the authentic Islam, ensuring that the message of the faith remained pure.”

Referring to the debates held by Imam Baqir (a.s.) and Imam Sadiq (a.s.) with figures such as Sufyan al-Thawri and Ibn Abi al-Awjā, the CEO of the International Ashura Foundation said, “These two Imams (a.s.) engaged in discussions with the scholars promoted by the ruling government to confront these deviations and to make people understand where the truth is.”

Referring to the toils Imam Sadiq (a.s.) endured in his efforts to clarify the truth, ultimately leading to his martyrdom, Ayatollah Akhtari stressed, “That Imam (a.s.) worked tirelessly to manifest the truth of the Islamic school and to accurately present the faith, enduring numerous difficulties so that the concepts of the Quran and Sunnah would reach us clearly, pure, and without deviation. In contrast, the powers seeking to create these deviations caused him various tribulations.”

The Chairman of the Supreme Council of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly expressed hope, saying, “May Allah the Almighty make us among the propagators and promoters of the school of Imam Sadiq (a.s.).”
